Professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), The University of Tokyo; Vice Director of the Center for Coproduction of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, The University of Tokyo; and pediatrician. He currently serves as President of the Japan Society for Disability Studies, Board Member of the Japanese Society of Developmental Neuroscience, Chair of the Cabinet Office Commission on Policy for Persons with Disabilities, and Member of the Science Council of Japan.

He has lived with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair as a result of neonatal asphyxia. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Tokyo, he worked in pediatrics at Chiba-Nishi General Hospital and in pediatric cardiology at Saitama Medical University, followed by doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo.

He now holds his current position. His areas of expertise include pediatrics and Tōjisha-Kenkyū (self-directed participatory research).
His major publications include Rehabilitation at Night (Igaku-Shoin, 2009); Tōjisha-Kenkyū on Developmental Disabilities (co-authored, Igaku-Shoin, 2008); The Craft of Connection (co-authored, NHK Publishing, 2010); The Philosophy of Pain (co-authored, Seidosha, 2013); Tōjisha-Kenkyū (Iwanami Shoten, 2020); and The Genesis of “Responsibility” (co-authored, Shin’yōsha, 2020).
